At Learning Connection, we follow the Missouri Pre-K Literacy Standards, set up by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The structure is based on the following guiding principles:
- All children actively seek to comprehend the world in which they live. Given the opportunity to make choices concerning their activities, they acquire knowledge, skills and the ability to solve problems.
- Children construct knowledge and values through interactions with peers, parents, other adults, and active exploration of the physical and social environments.
- Young children’s thinking contains predictable errors.
- Early learning and areas of development interact and influence each other.
- Families (parents) are the child’s first and most important teacher(s).
We also use the Kindergarten Readiness Skills listed by the Public Schools as a guide when the teachers do lesson plans.
Discipline - When children are actively involved in activities that have meaning to them, behavior problems are minimized. The structure of the Project Construct Curriculum helps children make their own choices, become involved, and cooperate with others. By keeping the environment organized and educating children about natural consequences, children develop self-discipline and learn to manage their conflicts in a positive, constructive manner. When a child displays unacceptable behavior, the teacher first encourages the child to use his/her words to recount what happened and explain what would have been the better choice. The teacher emphasizes what was done wrong and why. If the negative behavior continues, then time away from the group or
activity is taken, called “individual time.”
Field Trips - Field trips are a part of the Pre-K classroom. They are a great way to teach by giving children hands-on, real-world experiences. Children are transported in our 13 passenger van.
Weekly letters – To keep you informed on your child’s daily activities, weekly notes are sent home to inform you of what exciting things have been happening in the classroom and what your child is learning about.
Additional Classes Offered – You child can participate in Gymnastics once a week, which is offered by Gym-Zzouri Gymnastics, computer classes, offered once a week by Computer Palace.
